Your questions surrounding CBD and planes answered

CBD oil is fast becoming an essential pain and anxiety management product all over the world in 2019.

CBD’s ability to reduce inflammation and its calming influence has the ability to make it an ideal product for plane passengers struggling with chronic pains or anxiety when flying.

CBD is a product of the cannabis plants hemp and marijuana.

It is processed and refined, excluding the product ‘THC’ , which is known to have psychoactive side effects.

This makes CBD a pure substance with incredible benefits and the lack of any unwanted intoxication.

But is it legal to fly with CBD?  While it lacks psychoactive side effects, many fear that because CBD comes from cannabis they may run into trouble when boarding a flight with a hemp based product.

Due to CBD’s links to prohibited drugs, CBD remains quite taboo in 2019 and so, this article plans to outline where and how you can use CBD products on a plane.

Is CBD oil legal on internal U.S flights?

Good news! After the legalisation of CBD in the United States in December 2018, it is now perfectly legal to carry on CBD products onto internal flights, by internal, we mean State to State travel.

However, the TSA (Transport Security Administration)  have flight rules which still apply to CBD as they do for all liquids.

These rules affect the size and quantity of CBD you are legally permitted to bring aboard a flight in the United States.

Whatever CBD oils you bring aboard can not exceed 100 millimeters / 3 ounces.

Cannabis oils made from marijuana are produced with higher levels of THC, the psychoactive product of the cannabis plant and these CBD products remain strictly prohibited on flights so make sure your CBD product is hemp based.

Ensure that your carry-on (hemp based) CBD products comply to the legal limits for THC as the TSA may check product labels to measure you CBD products THC count as you pass through security at US airports.

A full spectrum Hemp based CBD oil, which are legally required to include only 0.3% THC, will get you through internal United States customs without a problem. This is your right according to the 2018 Farm Bill.

Can a sniffer dog smell my CBD product?

CBD is the cannabinoid Cannabidiol, it is odorless so this alone is not going to cause alarm to a sniffer dog.

However, most full spectrum CBD oils contain terpenes, which can be smelt by sniffer dogs and unfortunately be mistaken by our four legged friends as marijuana.

This is all the more reason to carry with you the documentation provided with your CBD product in order to show any police officer or security guard that might require an explanation.

In the unlikely case that this would happen to you, it is important that you remain calm and collected.

Explain to the officer that it is your right to legally carry a CBD oil in the United States so long as it abides to the aforementioned 0.3% THC law.

How can I be extra sure there won’t be any problems with my CBD product?

If you’re worried or concerned about passing through customs with your CBD product, you should also bring along the product information bill which should have come with your CBD product.

This information booklet will act as a medical document, providing proof of your products ingredients and assuring TSA regulators that your CBD oil falls within the legal parameters.

Oh, and don’t try to hide your CBD product from the TSA, transparency is always the best approach.

Coupled with the label, your information bill will prove your CBD oil is perfectly legal, you will be able to take your CBD oil onboard without a problem.

Complying with the TSA rules is the only way to safely get your CBD oil onboard and there are many benefits to using CBD oils during your flight.

What are the benefits of using a CBD oil on a plane?

There are several reasons why you might choose to take CBD products during a flight.

Firstly, it is guaranteed not to intoxicate the user and therefore serves as better solution to drinking alcohol in order to tackle nerves.

Many flyers suffer from headaches or stomach cramps due to nerves when flying.  CBD has been proven to have a calming influence and is being used in growing numbers to tackle a fear of flying.

Plane seats are often uncomfortable, especially on long haul flights.

Those with chronic pains can suffer particularly during cramped flights.

CBD is an excellent anti-inflammatory and can now be used on flights to provide a more comfortable experience for passengers.

Still not convinced?

If you have decided that you’d be comfortable not bringing a CBD product on your flight or you feel the TSA restrictions on size and quantity won’t allow you to bring your required dosage of CBD with you, I’d suggest shipping your CBD to your destination.

Checking-in your CBD is perhaps not the best option, while there should be no problem with putting CBD products in your suitcase, while we find ourselves in the early days of CBD legalisation, it is better that you have the product with you along with its documentation, that way you can explain its legality should you be required to.

Is CBD oil legal on international flights from the United States?
